One of the first lessons I learned when I started meal prepping was that you can ruin a perfectly good lunch by storing it in the wrong container. It took me a few messy lunches to realise that not all meal prep containers are created equal.
A lot of people start with whatever plastic containers they have lying around — the takeout tubs, the stained Tupperware from college days — and wonder why their meals look sad by day three. Plastic seems convenient: it's light, cheap, and if you leave one in the staff fridge for three weeks no one cries if it disappears. But the trade-offs are real. Plastic scratches easily, absorbs odors, and sometimes has a faint orange tint from that one time you stored leftover curry in it. Even the “microwave safe” varieties can warp or stain over time, and there’s always that nagging question about what happens when plastic gets repeatedly heated.
Glass containers, on the other hand, are like the grown-up version of meal prep. Yes, they’re a bit heavier, but they’re also durable, don’t absorb smells, and you can see exactly what’s inside without playing the “mystery lunch” game. Glass doesn’t stain from tomato sauce or turmeric, and it’s oven safe up to a point, meaning you can take your Sunday bake straight into the fridge. The lids on most glass sets these days have silicone seals, which means fewer leaks in your bag and fewer awkward moments in the break room trying to clean quinoa out of your purse.
Plastic does still have its place. It’s great for dry snacks, fruit, or situations where you’re carrying a lot and every ounce counts. If you’re traveling with kids or prone to dropping things after a long night shift, plastic might spare your toes. The key is to know when to use each type and, if you’re investing in your meal prep game, to make sure you have at least a few reliable glass containers in the rotation.
Size and shape also matter. Shallow, wide containers are perfect for salads and bowls because they allow you to spread the ingredients and reheat evenly. Tall, narrow containers are better for soups and stews because they fit nicely in a lunchbox and don’t slosh around. Consider containers with divided compartments if you like to keep your roasted veg separate from your protein until you’re ready to eat. There’s something satisfying about opening your lunch to find the roasted sweet potatoes haven’t made friends with the chicken just yet.
Portion control is another perk of choosing the right container. A set of standardized 2-cup and 4-cup glass dishes can help you eyeball serving sizes without a scale. After prepping for a while, you start to recognize that the blue-lid container is a “hungry day” size and the small round one is for snacks. This subconscious meal math is a lot easier when the containers are consistently sized rather than an eclectic mix of yogurt tubs.
Don’t forget the lunchbox itself. You can have the best containers in the world, but if they don’t fit in your bag you’ll find yourself stacking them Jenga-style every morning. Look for a lunchbox that comfortably holds your go-to container sizes and has some insulation. Some nurses swear by a soft-sided cooler with an ice pack to keep salads crisp through a 12-hour shift. Others prefer a sturdy bento-style box with compartments built in so they don’t need separate containers for everything. Whichever route you go, make sure it’s something you’re happy to carry every day and that won’t get tossed aside because it’s bulky or awkward.
As you piece together your meal prep kit, remember that the goal is to make your life easier, not to spend hours researching lids at 2 AM.
